Early Life And Education
He grew up in Reston, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. His dad, Frank, who used to play basketball for Idaho, taught him how to play. Garza watched videos his dad had of NBA players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and tried copying their moves.
When He was a freshman at Maret School in Washington, D.C., he couldn’t dunk a basketball until he was a sophomore. In high school, Chuck Driesell, who is the son of the famous basketball coach Lefty Driesell, coached him.
He was a highly-rated high school player, getting four stars. He picked Iowa for college basketball over other schools like Georgetown, Georgia, and Notre Dame.
NBA Career Stats
In his first college game against Chicago State, He scored 16 points. Then, in the next game against Alabama State, he got his first double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Because of his performance, he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
During the NCAA Tournament, He scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, which helped Iowa beat Cincinnati unexpectedly.
Throughout his sophomore year, he averaged 13.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Additionally, the media recognized him as an All-Big Ten honorable mention.
In the 2019-20 season, He had a standout game where he scored 44 points against Michigan, which is the third-highest score ever for Iowa. Despite the loss, it was a big achievement.
After that, he scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a win against Minnesota. Because of his performance, he was named Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week.
He got drafted by the Detroit Pistons as the 52nd pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He played really well in the Summer League, so the Pistons signed him to a special contract where he could play for both the Pistons and their G League team, the Motor City Cruise.
On April 4, 2024, Garza’s contract was changed to a regular NBA contract, meaning he could play for the Timberwolves in the 2024 NBA playoffs.
This happened right after a game against the Toronto Raptors where Garza scored 16 points in just 9 minutes, which was his highest score of the season up to that point. He is 6 ft 11 in (2.11 m) in height and his weight is approximately 265 lb (120 kg).

Garza’s cousins, Amar Alibegović, Mirza Alibegović, and Denis Alibegović, play pro basketball in Europe. His mom’s dad, Refik Muftić, was a talented soccer goalkeeper who played his whole career with FK Sarajevo.
